Gingrich, a former Speaker of the House and staunch Trump ally, has made fairly ambitious claims about Trump’s historical significance:

  • In a recent interview, Gingrich said he believes Trump has a “real shot at becoming number 3 in the pantheon of American Presidents.
    • He qualified this by saying that the only two Presidents he believed are clearly above him are George Washington and Abraham Lincoln — “nobody is going to replace Washington … and nobody is going to replace Lincoln.
    • He said Trump is already “in that league” alongside Franklin D. Roosevelt, particularly if his second term continues to produce big changes.
  • Gingrich has described Trump’s inaugural address as “among the most revolutionary inaugural addresses in American history,” and suggested that if Trump achieves the changes he laid out, he could be the “most consequential president since Lincoln.
  • Earlier, Gingrich characterized Trump as one of the “great change agents” in presidential history, placing him alongside the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Lincoln and Roosevelt.

So in short: Gingrich sees Trump not just as a major figure, but potentially among the top three in U.S. presidential history — provided future achievements follow through.
